Abstract

In this paper the synthesis of nanoparticles of iron oxide from aqueous solution was carried at temperatures of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 °C and with a different precipitation rate controlled by addition of a precipitating agent. The possibility of synthesis of ferrofluid with different ratios of reactants (FeCl2 and FeCl3 solution and NH4OH) with moderate and vigorous stirring was also investigated. From precipitated nanoparticles of iron oxide with a suitable surfactant, stable suspension popularly known as a ferrofluid is obtained, which responds to the effect of the magnetic field, changes shape depending on the strength and shape of the magnetic field. Increasing temperature and precipitation rates and deviation from the recommended ratio of reactants lead to less active ferrofluid, while intensively mixing at precipitation has a beneficial effect
on the quality and stability of the ferrofluid. The size of nanoparticles and the activity of the resulting suspension changes by affecting certain parameters in the synthesis of ferrofluid.
