Abstract

There is something inherent, compelling and mystified in ruins and remains of the old fort. The issues
logically imposed at the first encounter with these witnesses of the past are linked to their current
condition, age and role in history. Historically, all those fortresses were more than the fortified
military structure. They have acted as political centers where their owners controlled large estates
they managed.
Most of the fort is in a state of decline, with missing parts incorporated in other buildings, in open
fields, covered with intrusive vegetation, or deliberately ignored because of legal restrictions that
prohibit private owners to participate in the performance of protection. Many have disappeared,
while some still witness past in stone and mortar, earthmoving and rubble, with diverting attention
from the structure.
