Abstract

The paper presents investigation of the influence of water to cement ratio, w/c, to speed the corrosion
of concrete and reinforcing steel in concrete caused by salts of magnesium. The samples were
preparatory varying w/c (0,5 and 0,7). The test samples were treated nine months in the following
solutions: 5% MgCl2, 5% MgSO4, 5% MgCl2 + 5% MgSO4, H2O. After nine months followed by
testing the speed of corrosion. Corrosion testing of concrete was conducted by measuring the
compressive strength of samples in a hydraulic press "Matest" of 2000 kN. Testing of corrosion of
reinforcing steel in cement mortar is carried on the measuring device which consists of an
electrochemical cell and potentiostat/galvanostat EG&G/PAR Model 263A. Results of corrosion of
reinforcing steel are presented in form of anode polarization curves of reinforcement steel in cement
mortar, using method of potentiodynamic polarization. The results show that the corrosion rate of
concrete and reinforcing steel is much greater in the samples prepared with higher water cement
ratio in all solvents
